Food for Europe (2013) is a large-scale installation comprising suitcases packed with African textiles, bank notes, cigarettes, and dried fish. It reverses the narrative of Western aid and food parcels being sent to help “struggling” and “poor” African nations. Hazoumè often describes being met with disbelief at home in Benin when he describes the increasing numbers of poor and homeless people on the streets of Paris and London. In this way he attempts to counter the mistaken but still pervasive belief that the streets of London are “paved with gold, the belief which drives migration. The piece addresses, in Hazoumè’s astringent yet droll manner the long list of items confiscated from African travellers as they pass through customs halls coming into Europe, along with broader issues relating to exploitation and migration.
